History In The Making |

I am a twenty-five year old African American woman and today I voted for the first time. |
Although I've been able to vote for the last seven years I've never been more inspired than the present to participate in the Electoral process. With today's unemployment issues, an all time high in foreclosures and people losing their entire life savings in the Stock Market I couldn't sit around and continue to do nothing. These issues are facing everyone in families all across America.
Barack Obama is the candidate that offers hope during these trying times. Initially he was my choice in candidatesy strictly because he is a black man, and I wanted the opportunity for my people. That however wasn't enough of a reason for me to get out and vote. Over the past few months I've grown a newfound interest in his message and I've taken the initiative to learn more about what his platform for change is.
Today we live in a more socially conscious society and the idea of going GREEN has turned into more of a lifestyle than simply a trend. Obama speaks about clean air and using natural energy, and not being so dependent on foreign companies, whose countries do not like us as Americans to begin with. Being with the Democratic Party he stands behind Al Gore 100% on his stance about global warming and he participates in such efforts, with interest in what an individual Carbon footprint is. He's bring awareness to this growing problem that one day soon it will have a profound impact on how we live our lives day to day from the air we breathe to the water we drink.
Senator Obama speaks on the failing job market and helping ou the middle class. Although his notion to spread the wealth has been perceived by his opponents as a communistic dictatorship, the idea isn't to far fetch. "Wealthy" people make up about 5% of today's economy according to the census bureau yet they make nearly 10'xs the amount of money a year as the other 95% of the nation. In this same 5% are some of the people to blame for this historic downward spiral on Wall Street, thus leaving America with a for sale sign permanently attached. All this causing even more companies to go overseas taking millions of jobs with them. I have friends whose parents have worked at jobs for decades and have lost hundreds of thousands of retirement money in shares of their own company to no fought of their own.
Another issue the Senator touches base on is a little dearer to my heart. His plans to end this seven-year war in Iraq, which has also, cripple our economy with a hefty price tag in the trillions. Coming for a military family, I've seen first hand what the effects of war do not only to the soldiers but the families of these Hero's as well. Coming home to an incompetent health care system, veterans are finding little help with both physical and psychological wombs from combat. They are becoming part of the fasted growing homeless population our nation has ever seen. The same government that promised them so much when they enlisted is turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to their concerns. Not to mention America's vulnerability being so weak in man power, our country is open to attack from terrorist again. We are so consumed in Iraq and so financially invested that we are ignoring the genocide in the Sudan, or the savage killings in the Congo.
These are only but a few of the many issues Barack Obama speaks about in his speeches for change. Today I feel as though I've become a part of history. I've done my part. I have an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and pride. Now all I can do is cross my fingers and pray "A Change Gone Come"... |
