Street Ballers Movie Trailer

BlazinStreetz sat down with the crew of the movie Streetballers to see what they have been doing in these streetz.

BlazinStreetz :When did you guys first come together to go into production for the movie?

Matt :The project was started six and a half years ago and the three of us have been working on it for the last six years to get it to the point to where its being played at the Mann Chinese theater here in LA.

BlazinStreetz :What motivated you to create this movie?

Matt :I think it was a combination of things. My experiences playing on the courts growing up, my love for basketball, I tend to do socially conscious pieces, and I really wanted to create a story about the division that takes place in the city of St.Louis and really bring a community of people together.

BlazinStreetz :Was there a particular mission the team wanted to accomplish while making the movie?

Matt :The main goal was to create a truly authentic story that not only people in St.Louis could relate to but people worldwide could relate to. We wanted to make a conscious step in changing how things are (ex. racism socialism) and film making is one of the best ways to reach out to the masses.

BlazinStreetz :What made you guys wanna work in film?

Matt :I have loved basketball as a kid and I'll always love it. I'll play basketball until I can't walk anymore. I've been a story teller and I fell in love with literature and writing as well so that's what made me want to work in this industry plus I felt I could make a bigger impact in this field.

Pat :Well I think the opportunity just presented itself to me. I was acting and I was living in Los Angeles and I knew Matt as a kid and we reconnected. I learned he had this script so I read the script and I really wanted to be a part of something positive and stir away from glamorizing the negative. I think that it allows the opportunity for compassion and understanding of other peoples view points which leads to unity and that's how Matt caught my attention.

Craig :It kind of just chose me. I was working for a sports agency for a long time and had a lot of athletes and 6 years ago Matt was looking for a few players to shoot the original trailer. He contacted me and we met up with a few guys and shot the trailer. The trailer came out nice and after that Matt approached me and asked me about Producing and that's how I got on board. Later on down the road I had a role in the movie.

BlazinStreetz :All of you do more than one thing in regards to film making, do you find that more challenging as opposed to just focusing on just one aspect of film?

Matt :I think making an independent film you have to  be versatile and play more than one role. I think its unique in the fact that we have a natural talent to do more than one thing and the desire to perform. It was exciting to take on that challenge.

BlazinStreetz :Who is your favorite character in the movie and why?

Craig :Dante. He was a gangster and all of his scenes where very comical and I love to laugh.

Pat :I second that Dante is also my favorite character for the same reasons.

Matt :My favorite character in the film is Jacob. To me he exemplifies what a pure athlete should stand for and everything that is good that is in a individual striving to achieve greatness and at the same time trying to influence the people around him. I think his character is so strong and spiritual and I think Jacob is the type that every athlete should try to model after.

BlazinStreetz :During the production of the movie what obstacles did you encounter?

Matt :This could be a long conversation.. (laughs) On any giving day we faced turbulence whether it was the weather, making sure everyone was on set on time to making sure the athletes didn't get injured. Even making sure tha the location fell through. There was one of the worst black outs in St.Louis history one week before we went into production. It left a thousand houses with out power from 8-10 day. A lot of us were dealing with life issues in our environment other than trying to get the film of the ground.

BlazinStreetz :Is this movie based on a true story?

Matt :No the movie is based off a collection of true stories but it is a fictional piece.

BlazinStreetz :What separates this movie from any other streetball movies?

Matt :It's the first authentic street ball movie. Its not a hollywood production with all the glits and glamor or a Harlem Globetrotters act. It's a story about real people and real events and the struggles that people face on a day to day basis and I think this movie defines itself because of its authenticity.

BlazinStreetz :What advice would you give to new film makers getting into the business?

Matt :Never take no for an answer because your going to hear that everyday of the week. You have to work hard and strive towards your goals.
