| A Central Florida lawmaker says he's tired of seeing kids walk around in public with their underwear showing out of their pants. |

That's why Senator Gary Siplin is once again sponsoring legislation that would ban the popular fashion statement at public schools.
Siplin has filed a bill that would prohibit students from exposing their underwear by wearing their pants or shorts below the waist. Anyone caught violating the ban would receive a warning. If they are caught a second time, they would face a three days suspension. A third time and that suspension would be extended to 10 days.
"I am tired of seeing these men walking around in the malls with their pants showing their underwear and things like that, and walking sideways and holding their pants up, because their belt, they still have to hold their pants up. So, it's very offensive and people are tired of it," Siplin said.
Siplin has failed in recent years to pass the bill. But in past years the penalty for young people wearing their pants too low would have been a second degree misdemeanor, meaning violators could have been put in jail for up to 10 days.
"It improves hygiene for our youth, it gives them more respect for themselves and others and I think it will bring about more sense of integrity and personal respect," Siplin.
Siplin's bill has not been assigned to any committees yet and does not have a companion bill in the House. |
