1 on 1 with Susan Taylor

Poised and stylish in a black form fitting sweater and sleek black pants Susan Taylor can command the presence of any room.

Susan Taylor, the editorial director of Essence Magazine, has been driving force behind the Magazine since 1981. Taylor was the first African American woman to win the Henry Johnson Fisher Award for magazine publishing in 1999, which is the highest honor that can be given in the magazine world.

Not only is Taylor an accomplished journalist, she is also a published author. She has written three books, In the Spirit: The Inspirational Writings of Susan L. Taylor, Lessons in Living and Confirmation: The Spiritual Wisdom That Has Shaped Our Lives, the latter co-authored with her husband, Khephra Burns. I got a chance to speak with Taylor when she visited Florida A and M University on Tuesday to discuss the Essence Cares program that will be implemented in FAMU as well as across the state.
