House Republicans call on Obama to secure border

By: cnn.comPosted On: 04/28/2010 11:04 A

House Republicans on Wednesday called on the White House to deploy the National Guard to secure the border.

Later Wednesday, House Democrats are expected to hold a news conference to denounce Arizona's new immigration law, arguably the toughest in the nation, and renew the push for federal reform legislation.

The new law, signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer last week, requires police officers in the state to determine whether people are in the United States legally if there is a reason to suspect they aren't.

Slated to go into effect 90 days after the close of Arizona's legislative session, the law would require immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times. Before that, officers could check someone's immigration status only if that person was suspected in another crime.

Members scheduled to speak at the Democratic news conference include Reps. Xavier Becerra, D-California; Raul Grijalva, D-Arizona; Luis Gutierrez, D-Illinois; Mike Honda, D-California; Nydia Velazquez, D-New York; Joseph Crowley, D-New York; and Jared Polis, D-Colorado, among others.
