Apple sells 2 million iPads in less than 60 days

By: cnn.comPosted On: 06/01/2010 12:33 P

Apple says that it has sold more than 2 million iPads since the device debuted April 3rd.

It's safe to assume that the vast majority of those sales came from the U.S. market, as the iPad only just went on sale last weekend in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.K. Apple didn't say how many iPads were sold internationally.

Speculation that Apple is having a hard time keeping up with demand for the iPad seems to have been confirmed by Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement announcing the sales numbers Monday.

"We appreciate [customer] patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone," said Jobs.

Apple also said there are now 5,000 apps specifically built for the iPad in the AppStore. In all, Apple has more than 200,000 apps in the store that are compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, or the iPad.

It took Apple 28 days to sell its first million iPads and about the same amount of time to sell its second million. It will be interesting to see what happens to sales now that the iPad is available in more countries.
