Veterans Make Real Sacrifice

Don’t tell me anything else about Miami’s Big 3 and the sacrifices they’ve made to play together.

Forgoing $15 million or so when you still get $100 plus million in salary doesn’t compare to what Lakers point guard Derek Fisher and Heat power forward Udonis Haslem sacrificed to stay with their respective teams.

These are two veterans that left millions on the table elsewhere to be a part of what they hope will be championship teams. And unlike Kobe Bryant or LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, they won’t have a chance to make that cash up in endorsements or in their next contract.

Fisher is 36 and probably on his last deal, a relatively meager three-year, $10.5 million deal he signed with a team he’s already helped win five championships. Haslem is a valued role player but likely won’t see a deal for the full mid-level exception after the five-year, $20 million deal he signed, with the Heat team he’s already helped to one title, runs outs.

Sacrifice?

That’s a sacrifice.

Fisher released a statement detailing his reasoning for passing up more money, in Miami of all places, to remain with team that drafted him in 1996, the same year Bryant entered the league:
