Hurricane Earl strengthened into a major hurricane on Monday, forecasters said.

It passed over the northern Leeward Islands on its way to the Virgin Islands, forecasters said.

Earl grew into a Category 3 hurricane Monday morning, the National Hurricane Center said. As of 11 a.m. ET, Earl's maximum sustained winds were at 120 mph (193 kph).

"On the forecast track, the center of Earl will pass near or over the northernmost Leeward Islands this morning and near the Virgin Islands this afternoon and this evening," the Hurricane Center said earlier Monday. The storm is expected to turn northwest on Tuesday.

"St. Maarten recently reported a sustained wind of 41 mph (67 kph) with a gust to 61 mph (98 kph)," the Hurricane Center said around 8 a.m. Monday.

Hurricane conditions were spreading across the northern Leeward Islands, and are headed for the Virgin Islands, forecasters said.

Hurricane warnings were in effect for Anguilla, St. Martin/St. Maarten, St. Barthelemy, Saba, St. Eustatius, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and the Puerto Rican islands of Vieques and Culebra.

"Hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area, in this case within the next 12 hours," the hurricane center said. "Preparations to protect life and property should have already been completed."

Hurricane conditions, including winds of at least 74 mph, are possible within the watch area within 12 to 24 hours, forecasters said.

Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Leeward Islands could get up to eight inches of rain and as much as 12 inches in isolated areas with higher elevations, the hurricane center said.
