Ndamukong Suh fined $7,500

The NFL has fined Detroit Lions rookie defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh $7,500 for slamming down Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme last week during a preseason game.

Suh grabbed Delhomme's face mask, twisted it, and wrapped his arms around the quarterback's head before forcing him to the ground during the second quarter of Saturday's exhibition in Detroit.

Browns coach Eric Mangini had said he expected the league to review the play, in which Delhomme was scrambling out of the pocket when he was grabbed by Suh, the No. 2 overall pick in April's draft.

After Suh flung the 35-year-old to the ground, Delhomme got up waving his arms in protest. Suh was assessed a 15-yard penalty for the infraction.

Browns backup quarterback Seneca Wallace had called for Suh to be suspended, but one of Suh's veteran teammates thought that was an overreaction.

"It definitely is," Kyle Vanden Bosch said. "I asked him what happened, and he said he thought Delhomme still had the ball. We're going after the quarterback and trying to make a play, and sometimes you make a mistake, but he wasn't trying to hurt anyone."

Mangini did not believe there was any intent on the part of Suh, the former Nebraska standout, to injure Delhomme.
