Ja Rule Facing 2 Years for Gun Charge

By: bbc.co.ukPosted On: 12/14/2010 7:29 A

US rapper Ja Rule faces two years in prison after pleading guilty in a Manhattan court to possessing a gun.

The weapon was found by police in his car when he was stopped for speeding after a hip-hop concert in July 2007.

A plea deal means Ja Rule, 34, will serve a shorter term than a possible 15 years if the case had gone to trial.

Last month, Lil Wayne left jail after serving eight months on similar charges after a gun was found on the rapper's tour bus following the same gig.

Ja Rule - real name Jeffrey Atkins - will return to court on 9 February but a sentencing date has yet to be set.

Police stopped Atkins in his sports car as he was leaving the Beacon Theater in New York, after they said they could smell cannabis.

A search revealed the pistol in a rear door.

The rapper, whose hits include Always on Time and Mesmerize, will remain free until sentencing, which is expected to include 18 months of supervised release following his prison term.
