El-P Says He And Killer Mike Used Ice Cube's Debut Album As Working Inspiration

By: hiphopdx.comPosted On: 05/20/2013 10:15 A

El-P says that Ice Cube provided them a good lesson on how to work together.

Producer/emcee and Company Flow founder El-P dropped by the Red Bull Academy Headquarters recently and sat down with Chairman Mao to talk about numerous topics, one of which being his collaborative R.A.P. Music album with Killer Mike.

When asked about the two's collaborative effort, El-P compared his work and understanding with Mike to Ice Cube's debut solo album.

"When Ice Cube had a falling out with the whole N.W.A. camp he did a really surprising thing," El-P said. "He went east and he worked with the Bomb Squad. At the time it didn't make sense to anybody... Because me and Mike both had that history of knowing that that's how that panned out, that reference was really good for us because in our minds, that's what we can do."

El-P would later go on to talk about producing Cannibal Ox’s underground classic Cold Vein and why Run the Jewels, his current musical partnership with Killer Mike, had to happen.
