Blazinstreetz.com sat down with Twista to see what he's doing in these streetz.
Q: How is it Different now having your own imprint with GMG apposed to you being an Artist for Atlantic?
A: Its
dope when you got the right people around you and experienced people
around you and the right connection. It's only bad when you think you
know everything and you like I got this, o I own this and I get a
percentage of that but don't really know how to take care of the
business end. The situation I'm in now I have more control and freedom
to create music the way I want.
Q:On this album you had more
control over what goes on the album was the freedom more a relief or
was it more stressful to make an album on your own?
A: Both. It
was both. Being with the label your constantly getting dope tracks
sent to you. You can literally sit back and wait for a track to fall
into your lap and then you can go in and record it. Even after that you
can have your A&R saying do this change that. The other way is that
you can have that freedom that you can put whatever you want on the
album. Make the intro how long pick the the cuts but you better be
ready to do the leg work when it comes to picking up the tracks and
just making sure that songs get mixed right the whole thing. Definitely
the full control is better only when your a veteran and know what your
doing.
Q: When making this album, with the music, did you wanna
reach out more for new fans or stay at home with your already strong
fan base?
A: I always wanna reach more fans and I know promotion
itself makes whatever your doing in the first place reach more people
but definitely with this album I was concerned about my core fans.
Q: You have been in the industry for a long time now, how has the game changed around you?
A: Technology
with the internet and everything. With selling music your banking on
selling that cd or tape but now you can store music digitally. You don't
actually have 2 put it on an item now. That changed the promotion you
know, like being from the midwest we didn't have access to video shoots
and record labels like other coasts did but now with the internet were
able to use myspace, youtube, facebook and everything else to promote
ourselves. There is always two sides to everything. The plus is that
with the internet you can touch more people but also at the same time
it makes that much more competition and now they can get your music
free so you really have 2 jazz it up to make people feel like they have
to go out and spend money on that cd or buy a mix tape online.
Q: How do you fell about the state of hip hop in Chicago?
A: Its
Definitely growing bigger then its ever been, like i said wit the
internet you can hear a lot of new artist and producers. I definitely
have to give it up to my fellow artists Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West the
artists they don't know also like L.E.P i see what they doing and i respect that.
One of the best things that helped out Chicago musically that i liked
is when i listened to DJ Timbuktu do his set live and play all Chicago
music. We have really really elevated as far as our sound and i think
more Chicago artist will get put on.
Q: What is your favorite track on this album?
A: Damn
good question. I got different favorite ones for different reasons but
I'd probably say the first tack misunderstood is one of my favorite
tracks. Its the Introduction track it set the tone of the album.
Q: How do you feel about the success of the single 'Wetter'
A: Man
real happy, blessed and honored. I feel like my hard work paid off. I
wasn't expecting how big it had got but I def believe in putting out
quality music and you will get a good response.
Q: On the single you can hear undertones of Adrenaline Rush's 'Get It Wet' what made you wanna stick with your foundation?
A: That's
my thing. There's different areas for different artists like with
certain artist it may be with in their character to keep changing and
certain artist, like me, who pioneer a sound, I feel like it would be
wrong to totally abandon that sound. So simply being put niggas wanna
hear Twista they don't want to hear me do nothing else. Every time i rap
slow or do something else they be like that's cool but go and spit that
fast shit. Especially with this album i wanted to give them that
official Twista sound.
Q: You worked with The Legendary Traxster on Adrenaline Rush, how was the chemistry working with him again on this album?
A: The
same and refreshing. Its like two basketball players get traded to
different teams and then eventually come back together. Its like damn I
missed how you use to throw me the oop you know. So the engineering the
musical quality the way he eq's my voice things like that I missed so
it was real real refreshing getting back to that and getting it back in.
You don't really wanna spoil something that's working because when you
got history and chemistry with somebody whether its music or what ever
it is there is no reason to spoil it. Don't let your ego get big and
ruin something that you got popping. I'm glad that both of us were well
rounded enough to come back together with our experience and get work
done.
Q: If you could work with any artist in the game that you haven't worked with who would it be?
A: To
be honest with you i wont lie, Eminem. I go off the feel of his music.
I listen to his flow pattern and the way he do music it makes me feel
like Hip Hop as whole made me feel day one. I get that adrenaline rush
he brings that feeling back that made you love rap for the first time.
Q: What is your plans for the coming future?
A: Really
to be honest I'm working on Category F6 and another album. On F6 I'm
going over all the same shit that critics didn't like on this album but
going in harder. The big surprise is when I go up into next year when I
come out with the new album. On this Im gonna let fans know how I think the
more conscious and deeper side of me. Im gonna hit a few on the head with
this one.
