Loaded Lux Shares Advice He Received From Big L

As part of Fuse TV's "Behind The Unsigned," Loaded Lux recalls how his parents, his city and the legendary Big L influenced him.

Since his infamous Smack/URL battle wit Calicoe, Loaded Lux has seen his stock rise. The Harlem native has been recording with Wyclef Jean, securing features from the likes of Redman and Method Man, and emcees such as Jay-Z and Lupe Fiasco have co-opted his “You gone get this work” catchphrase into the daily lexicon.

As his battle-tested bars against Calicoe showcased, fatherhood is a big deal to Lux. And while the heritage of his parents—hailing from the Bronx and Harlem respectively—plays a major part in his life philosophy, Lux points out that a fellow emcee also had a big impact on him.

“One of my most influential moments in my childhood—in relation to music—had to have been when Big L was alongside me in a cypher,” Lux revealed during a recent episode of Fuse TV’s “Behind The Unsigned” series. “After the cypher, he pulled me to the side and gave me some words of wisdom. He told me, ‘Keep going…never stop,’ and for some reason that’s like embedded in my brain. That’s always something that I talk about every time Big L is mentioned. That he took that time out to share those few words…but it meant so much.”

Unfortunately, the late Lamont “Big L” Coleman was shot and killed in 1999 at the age of 24. Big L was reportedly in talks with Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella imprint prior to his death. But as evidenced by Lux and former collaborators such as DJ Premier, those in the Hip Hop community have made efforts to keep his memory alive.
