Dom Kennedy Says West Coast Rap Is On Top

Dom Kennedy and Nipsey Hussle recently appeared on DJ Skee's "SKEE Live" program. Dom Kennedy cites Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q and Macklemore as artists pushing rap forward.

Dom Kennedy and Nipsey Hussle explained why they believe the West Coast scene is currently Hip Hop’s most prominent during their appearance on DJ Skee’s “SKEE Live” yesterday (October 1).

Following the commercial success of Kendrick Lamar’s debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ The Heist—both of which have been certified platinum by the RIAA—Kennedy said he feels like “a lot of the younger artists are taking it farther.”

“I think it’s been a long time coming; a lot of work in progress,” he said during his interview with DJ Skee. “I feel like the West Coast music is on top right now. To the mainstream, consciousness, you have Kendrick [Lamar], ScHoolboy [Q], Macklemore from Seattle, [Washington]. When you’re talking about Hip Hop, those are the people for the next five years.”

Nipsey Hussle credits West Coast Hip Hop’s success to artists unwilling to chase new trends. “I think if you stay down, you’re gonna come up on everything,” the Crenshaw rapper said. “I think everybody just stayed down, stayed doing what they was doing. They didn’t jump on trends. They stuck with what was more true to them.”
