Pusha T Says He Hasn't "Sold That Many Records"

Pusha T discusses album sales and reflects on The Clipse's success.

Pusha T, who has a new album out this week with My Name is My Name, says he doesn't feel he's sold a lot of albums.

"I don't think I sold that many records," Pusha T said in an interview with MTV. "My run in the music game hasn't been the average rise to success...I have sold a million records. My favorite album, I've sold no records, on Hell Hath No Fury...I only got three albums. I've been in the game since 2002. It's 2013. I only got three albums with the Clipse."

As Pusha T noted, Clipse has released three official albums, including the group's 2002 debut Lord Willin', 2006's Hell Hath No Fury and 2009's Til the Casket Drops. Lord Willin' was RIAA-certified gold, as per MTV, with the other two albums selling less than the group's debut.

During his interview, Pusha said that he still strives for greatness beyond sales figures.

"There's certain truths you just can't deny," Pusha T said. "I feel like a lot of people in Hip Hop are just superheroes. A lot of people are gonna act like they're platinum-plus every time. That's not me. I'm not, but there's still a way to be dope and creative without having those accolades and that's just what I strive to do."

On Pusha T's new album, the rapper speaks about album sales on "Hold On."

"I sold more dope than I sold records," Pusha raps on the selection. "You niggas sold records, never sold dope/ So I ain't hearin' none of that street shit / 'Cause in my mind, you mothafuckers sold soap.

In a HipHopDX interview published yesterday (October 7), Pusha T spoke about why he feels his new album is classic.

"I feel like the producers made movies, man," Pusha said in the interview with HipHopDX. "Yessir, lyrically, I think I just painted those pictures on those canvases, and I know in working with The-Dream—especially the records me and him did together—he really made it be colorful. Like, I had to be colorful. The pictures that was painted, the verses, the lyrics, you know what I'm saying? There is a record on my album called '40 Acres,' and honestly it’s almost like it’s a cappella, but still it sticks out. I think it’s going to be a fan favorite."
