MGK Remembers Battle Rapping In Cleveland

In an interview with DJ Skee on "Skee Live," the Bad Boy emcee says he was "in the hood" earning his stripes.
MGK visited DJ Skee’s “Skee Live” yesterday (October 29). During the conversation, the Lace Up emcee discussed his reputation in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.
“What people don’t realize is that I was really in the hood earning my stripes,” MGK said. “I genuinely got the pass in Cleveland. When I blew up, no one was like, ‘Who is this kid?’ Everyone was like, ‘Oh, that’s the one White boy from [around the way].’
MGK also shared his experiences battle rapping before signing with Bad Boy Entertainment in 2011.
“I was a rapping mothafucka,” he said. “I rapped. I used to battle rap in front of Tower City, which was the mall I used to work at. I would [go to a] block party and was the one White boy at this block party [rapping]. I’d do my thing. You would see people’s reaction and [they’d say], ‘Oh, Machine Gun, I heard about you,’ because word was spreading like, ‘Yo, this one little White mothafucka eating people.’ That was my shit. That’s why it’s like Lord have mercy on the first rapper that tries to get crazy with me on a record.”
MGK also emphasized his rise to recognition in an interview with HipHopDX earlier this year (June 20).
“Anyone in [Cleveland] with knowledge, they were like, ‘Yo, I probably have a hard copy of his music somewhere in my shit,’” said MGK. “’I remember this mothafucka down there battling people in front of Tower City, on the motherfucking train going to work every day rapping his ass off. He was outside the school getting laughed at, rapping his ass of, and he was in the lunchroom battling ol’ boy. He was passing out his CD, and no one wanted to fuck with his CD.’”
Last May, MGK represented the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2013 NBA Draft Lottery where the team won the rights to the first pick. The franchise selected UNLV power forward, Anthony Bennett during the NBA Draft in June.
