Released in 2011, record executive Steve Stoute’s “The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy” non-fiction work, was recently turned into a documentary series and will soon air on VH1.

Scheduled to premiere on VH1 in February 2014, the four-part series will be titled “The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop” and will address topics discussed in Stoute’s book, specifically the effect the genre of Hip Hop has had on all aspects of American culture.

According to VH1, among those expected to be featured in the series through the use of never-before-seen footage and interviews are Russell Simmons, Diddy, Mariah Carey, Al Sharpton, Tommy Hilfiger, and numerous other individuals who have had an impact on the culture in some way.

Involved in music since the early ‘90s, Stoute has worked at both Interscope Geffen A&M Records and Sony Music Entertainment as president of the urban music divisions. He also partnered with rapper and entrepreneur Jay Z several years ago to create the advertising agency known as Translation LLC.

The record exec will serve as executive producer of “The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop” while Billy Corben will serve as director.

An exact airdate for “The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop” has yet to be announced.
