Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 12/22/2013

Beyonce opens at #1, Eminem's "MMLP 2" remains in the Top 10 and B.o.B's "Underground Luxury" breaks into the Top 30.

This week, Beyonce continues to reign at the top of the Billboard Top 200 chart with her self-titled album. Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP lands at #6, an improvement from last week's placement at #8. Also this week, B.o.B and Lox debuted on the chart with Underground Luxury and The Trinity EP, respectively.

Beyonce's Self-Titled Album Remains #1
Beyonce's self-titled visual album took home the #1 spot this week, selling 373,803 units in its second week of sales. This was the first week of availability for physical copies of the self-titled project, which has moved more than 991,000 units overall. The album's #1 spot was in spite of Target's refusal to sell Beyonce. Recently, Beyonce spoke about the album's release strategy. "People experience music differently," Beyonce said. "Now people only listen to a few seconds of a song on their iPods. They don't really invest on a whole album. It's all about the single and the hype. There's so much that gets between the music and the artist and the fans. I felt like, I don't want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready from me to my fans."

Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 Lands At #6
Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which has sold more than 1,605,000 units overall, landed in the #6 slot with approximately 115,000 units sold this week, the project's seventh week of availability. The project improved in placement, as it was #8 last week. Eminem released his "The Monster" video early in the week. The video pairs Eminem with Rihanna in a clip that places the Detroit, Michigan rapper in various scenes from past music videos.
