August Alsina stopped by radio station 97.9 The BOX in Houston and gave his thoughts about the situation in Ferguson and how to combat racism.
The R&B singer references the late Michael Jackson when suggesting people take a self-reflective approach.
“I think...going back to MJ, alotta things start with the man in the mirror,” Alsina said during the interview. “Not as a Black man, but as a man, period, you gotta check yourself.”
Alsina adds that though confronting racism can be difficult, Black people need to take a stand.
“Sadly, racism is still alive and very much in effect,” he says. "But what I will say is, I love to see Black people standup and take a stand for themselves. And that’s exactly what’s going on. You know, sometimes it’s dangerous, but to get your point across, gotta do what you gotta do.”
Last month, unarmed Black teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed by a White police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
