An Amtrak train traveling from New York to Washington struck and killed a 14-year-old girl Tuesday morning, disrupting passenger train service in the Northeast corridor, Amtrak's busiest route, the rail company said.

Amtrak halted all trains through the area near Essex, Maryland, to give investigators access to the scene, Baltimore County Police Lt. Robert McCullough said.
Authorities said the teen was hit at 9:02 a.m. ET. Further details on how the accident occurred were not immediately available.
At 10:45 a.m., one track was reopened, and trains were allowed to travel at a restricted speed, Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell said.
She said no one aboard the southbound train was hurt. Trains were expected to resume their normal schedules before the evening rush hour, Connell added. The train was carrying 123 passengers.
Connell identified the train as No. 181 and said the incident occurred 11 miles north of the Baltimore, Maryland, rail station. She said the Essex Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced the girl dead.
Both Baltimore County Police and Amtrak were investigating. County Police dispatched both crime scene and homicide units. Homicide units are dispatched any time someone younger than 18 is killed, McCullough said.
