Detroit City Council member Monica Conyers, the wife of a powerful Democratic congressman John Conyers, has pleaded guilty to accepting cash bribes in exchange for supporting a sludge contract with a Houston company.
Detroit City Council member Monica Conyers, the wife of a powerful Democratic congressman John Conyers, has pleaded guilty to accepting cash bribes in exchange for supporting a sludge contract with a Houston company.
Conyers appeared at a federal court hearing Friday morning in Detroit before Judge Avern Cohn, who accepted the plea agreement and said he would decided Conyers' sentence at a later date.
The 44-year-old fiery first-term council member spoke quietly and only in response to the judge's questions.
City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. told WJBK-TV Friday that according to the City Charter, any elected official found guilty of a felony would have to step down from the council.
John Conyers, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, has no role in the case.
