Suspect in 8 Virginia killings surrenders

A suspect in the shooting deaths of eight people in Virginia turned himself in early Wednesday after spending the night in the woods, authorities said.

Christopher Speight, 39, was wearing a bulletproof vest when he surrendered around daybreak to authorities who were maintaining a several square-mile perimeter in Appomattox County in search of him, said Sheriff O. Wilson Staples.

Staples said Speight had no weapons on him when he surrendered peacefully around 7:10 a.m. ET. Charges are pending.

Authorities said explosive devices may be at the Appomattox home in and around where seven of the victims were found. Bomb technicians and dogs were searching the area, which is about 75 miles from Richmond, Staples said.

The sheriff said authorities did not know a motive for the shootings. Authorities said they believe Speight acted alone.

The eight victims -- including both males and females -- have not yet been identified, but authorities said Speight was acquainted with them. Staples said the suspect lived at the home and co-owns it and adjoining land.

The shootings came to light when a person was discovered badly wounded in the middle Route 703 Tuesday afternoon. That person died later at a hospital.

Arriving at the scene, police heard gunshots, authorities said. A search turned up the seven bodies in and around the home.

The perimeter was established Tuesday afternoon and included canine units and helicopters. One of the helicopters was shot at, Virginia State Police said.

"The helicopter was struck at least four times" and "was able to make an emergency landing in a field near the scene," a police statement said.

Authorities said they believe a high-powered rifle fired the bullets.
