On a day flowing with provocative stuff about Tiger Woods, we find ourselves looking at a story from the Belfast Telegraph -- yes, that's Northern Ireland -- with the best double entendre we've seen in weeks. Suffice it to say, there are enough stories floating around cyberspace not to repeat the headline.
 
We can tell you, however, of the growing swirl that followed a report first mentioned on this site in Caught on the Fly: Woods reportedly will return to golf this month in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships.
While the story has taken on a life of its own, truly a Frankenstein's monster existence, there is no credible confirmation -- even from the original source, the Herald Sun in Melbourne, Australia. That publication ran the story with perhaps the thinnest of all possible sources: "strengthening whispers."
 
More reputable journalism comes from other sources, foremost of which in this case is the Arizona Daily Star of Tucson, where the match play event will take place Feb. 17-21. And according to that pub, the good folks running the four-day soiree have no indication Woods will take part.
 
For its part, the PGA follows the rule it applies to course-side spectators while golfers address their balls: Silence, please. "We have no comment," spokesman Ty Votaw said.
 
It is worth noting that Woods ended an eight-month layoff after knee surgery by playing in Tuscon a year ago.
 
However, the Daily Star's Greg Hansen writes:
 
"On Wednesday, [Wade Dunagan, executive director of the WGC event,] said he had not received, and did not expect to receive, any official statement from Woods or the PGA Tour. He did acknowledge that the volume of incoming phone calls and tournament inquiries had accelerated.
 
" 'This event has a lot of moving pieces,' he said. 'Wouldn't it be nice if we could add Tiger to the list? But I'm excited about a lot of things, even if he doesn't play here.' "
 
Woods, from all reliable reports, is completing treatment for sex addiction at a Mississippi clinic. He has, for certain, taken leave from the PGA tour to fix his personal divots and patch up a shanked marriage with the aggrieved Elin Nordgren Woods.
 
Stories about when and where Woods will make his return to golf are proliferating, with the highest level of speculation pointing to the Masters. But even the Herald Sun gets something right when it notes: "It's safe to assume [Woods] will not turn up cold at Augusta."
 
But since you are dying to know more about the Belfast headline, we'll spill some details about what prompted it.
 
Canadian manufacturer Creative Classics, sensing a marketing opportunity, is peddling a set of a dozen golf balls, each with the image of a woman linked to Woods' affairs.
 
One of the pictured parties, Veronica Siwik-Daniels, a/k/a porn actress Joslyn James, is teed off at Creative Classics for including her in what's called its "Mistress Collection."
 
According to the New York Daily News, James "is concerned that the risk of violence against women may be increased because of this product," her attorney said. Hitting her image with a golf club thus becomes a safety program worth a crusade -- or a perhaps lawsuit.
 
We also must report the Daily News, a bastion of tabloid journalism, ran its story on a web site gossip page, under a banner with Woods and six or his reputed paramours.
 
Another standard of tasteful journalism, the New York Post, has a similar Web entry -- Tiger Blog, which includes only four females who are believed to have partaken of Woods' favors. And the Post filing sparked a report that in a Web search appears on a newspaper in India.
 
The world, obviously, is watching for the return of Tiger Woods. And no matter how thin the sources, Woods is the hottest, juiciest story going.
