Big K.R.I.T. Explains "Live From The Underground" Backlash

Big K.R.I.T. breaks down lines from his first "Caddillactica" single.

After releasing his first Cadillactica single in April, Big K.R.I.T. spoke with The Urban Daily and broke down some of the lines on the song.

Explaining one of his lyrics as a response to backlash he received about hooks on his first album, K.R.I.T. recalled hook-writing on songs and albums from years ago.

“The actual line that I expressed as far as, ‘I hope the hook wasn’t too simple,’ it’s because of a lot of backlash I got off my 2012 debut project with Def Jam, Live From The Underground, about how people felt like my hooks were too simple,” he said. “It was kind of weird in a day and age where hooks are meant to be made where people can remember them. It’s not that I took that to heart, I was like, ‘Oh, okay, if you feel that way then I’m gonna shine light on how simple hooks can be in general.’ Most of the classic records that you love and grew up listening to weren’t the most complex hooks ever. They were very simple but they were heartfelt, they were hooks you could understand and feel.”

Speaking about another reference on “Mt. Olympus,” K.R.I.T. spoke about remaining loyal to Mississippi in an industry that often overlooks the state’s relevance.

“The line about labels signing rappers because of their talents or based off of what’s going on or is it all hype?” he said, “I wanted to put that all in the middle of the actual verse just to make people think about that, as far as, ‘You ain’t sold out a show until you sell out one in Mississippi.’ A lot of artists never go to Mississippi and perform and a lot of their fanbase is there, they actually go to the store and buy physical copies of the album, not digital, physical. But they bypass Mississippi as far as tours is concerned, shows. I always go to Mississippi when I have a tour.”

Earlier this month, K.R.I.T. announced a new tour throughout the US. “I am excited to get on the road,” Big K.R.I.T. said in a press release. “This tour will give fans a little taste of what is to come. I am traveling with a message, a message about our culture-where we were and what we have come to. I want to make sure people are paying attention to what is happening in their lives and in Hip Hop today.”
